 Baynesfield Glacial Pavements
This glacial pavement was formed by the action of glaciers which covered the area during the last ice age. The surfaces over which the glacier moved were eroded by rock fragments trapped in the ice which produced the characteristic pattern of striations and chattermarks, discontinuous striations in the rock caused when the glacier did not press uniformly on the valley floor beneath it. The site is a fine example of a glacially striated pavement and there are others in the province including ones at Vryheid, Table Mountain outside Pietermaritzburg, and Durban.
